A common phenomenon is that a great many of students are not able to read Chinese passages of English in textbooks, not to mention reading original English articles in newspapers. Why so many students have difficult in reading, especially in English newspapers reading? There are many reasons. On one hand, they pay no attention to English reading and have little experience in reading. On the other hand, they don’t know how to read for the lack of effective methods and skills. According to the results of my questionnaire of 100 English learners, I find 78% learners are interested in English newspapers reading, and 65% learners find it difficult to read foreign articles, and only 36% learners have

The problems can be listed as follows:⑴ too many unfamiliar vocabularies;(2) passive attitude;(3) way of thinking in Chinese;(4) confusing about foreign culture.That’s why so many students have difficult in improving general level of English. Do anything, and methods are the most important. In order to improve English through reading English newspapers, the study of reading skills are quite necessary and urgent.1.2 Learning theories This part builds up a theoretic framework to support the utilization and skills of English newspapers reading in the teaching of English reading.1.2.1 Krashen’s Input HypothesisDuring the last two decades, Krashen’s Input Hypothesis have gained substantial acceptance in second language education. It is widely believed that the most effective way of learning a foreign language is to study it in the target language community. The Input Hypothesis claimed “humans acquire language in only one ?Cway-by understanding messages or by receiving comprehensible input” . Krashen, in 1992, also stated,

And I believe reading can promote language development because interesting and comprehensible input will result in language acquisition. As Gardrer, he has pointed out a most effective way to produce large-scale vocabulary growth through an activity reading, providing more comprehensible input seems to be a more reasonable strategy. English newspapers are quite abundant of foreign information and original works. Reading and listening belong to language input.
